February 15, 2010 Leave a comment

This week we had a guest speaker.

Her name was Geraldine Gray ànd she is from the Department of Informatics in ITB.

She came in to talk about Learning Styles and its relevance to Creative Digital Media.

I was amazed when she told us that there ways 60 different ways of categorising how people learn  some include:

  • 1. Channel mode of learning,
  • 2. Cognitive strengths of learning,
  • 3. Manner/style of learning,
  • 4. Personality Difference,
  • 5.  Types of learning behaviour.

Channls of learning

How you like to take in information.

1. Visual

2. Auditocy

3. Kinasthetic

Those are the main 3 Categories, you can be just from one or even from a mix.

Although an interesting fact is that the Average attention span of all them is 12minutes at a tme. Which means if your in a lecture for more than 12 minutes then your most likely not gonna take anymore in unless you have a little break.

Cognitive

Linguistic

Non-Linguistic

Affective                      Feeling, Emotions

7 Different intelligences

  • Verbal Linguistic
  • Logical Mathematical
  • Musical
  • Visual Spatial
  • Bodily Kinasthetic
  • Interpersonal
  • Intrapersonal
  • Naturalistic

This Weeks Labs were Fun

We made a 3D Model of a Surfboard with some bite marks from a shark taken out of it.

We made Hello Kitty from Complete Scratch in Adobe Illustrator CS4

Both tasks were really fun,

Our 3D Models were all different and it was fun trying out different Shapes.

Making Hello Kitty was fun because everybodys came out Different.

I cant wait for Next weeks Guest Speaker and I definately cant wait for next weeks labs.

Semiotics

November 27, 2009 Leave a comment

I really Enjoyed this project

I was told to take 1 Celebrity Picture And Pick 3 of the following Themes and make them look like they are one of the mentioned themes by adding images into the picture.

The list of themes :

•I am masculine

•I am feminine

•I am wealthy

•I am intelligent

•I am evil

•I am popular

My celebrity was Brian Lenihan

The 3 themes i chose were:

•I am feminine

•I am evil

•I am wealthy

Brian Lenihan Evil:

To start i got a picture of Brian Lenihan and cropped him.

Then i Made a new layer and whitened out his eye,

I Burn around his eyes to add an evil kind of look,

I added horns and burned the surrounding area on his forehead.

I Deleted the tounge from his mouth and brushed in some black to make it look like his mouth was open,

I got a picture of 50 euro notes and Cropped it and placed t in his mouth,

I smuged the end in towards his mouth.

Next i got the HOW TO book and edited it to add in my own text.

I added a Flame Background

Entered some text from star Magazine

And brushed 4stars in.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE OBJECTS IN PICTURE  1.

The classic horns make you think Evil,

So does scars on his face and white eyes burned around the edge.

People always associate Flames with evil if it is behind a figure.

Brian Lenihan Feminine:

I started off with cropping the picture of Brian Lenihan,

I then replaced the background,

I then put a table top in front of him,

I placed a salad bowl in front of him

Then i placed a Gucci bag on the table also,

I put make up on using a round soft brush on about 30% opacity,

I put Earrings on him,

I put a Pink hat on him

And i brushed his tie to make it pink.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE OBJECTS IN PICTURE  2

Pink is always associated with Feminine side ,

The big hoop earrings is for girls to, although i dunno wether it is mainly irish style or not.

Salad is normally associated with woman,

I always coloured his tie pink.

Brian Lenihan Wealthy:
I started off with cropping the background out,

I done it simply a Solid black because i wanted attention to focus on the main subject which was added later

I cropped 50euro notes out of a picture and placed them around him,

And Cropped a house that is made out of money out,

And added a shadow to it,.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE OBJECTS IN PICTURE 3

The only thing that i added really was MONEY MONEY and more MONEY

I hope you enjoyed this post ,

because i know i did.

Also hope you liked the pictures.

See ya soon

Design Principles

November 27, 2009 Leave a comment

This week we learned about design principles.

Bitmap Images

Advantages of bitmap images are:

Bitmaps can represent complex,

photographic images;

the grid can be filled with thousands or millions of subtle variations of colour.

Another advantage is that bitmap images are widely recognized and almost every program accepts them.

Disadvantages

Bitmaps can effectively be made smaller, but

cannot be made larger without degrading the

quality of the image

Bitmap Images can be quite large in filesize.

GIF images

Gif images only have 256 colours so they are very poor for photographic images.

they can be animated and can be transparent if you choose so.

JPEG

JPEG images are capable of displaying millions of colours at once,

allowing for the complex blend of hues that occur

in photographic images.

Quite good compression is also effective in JPEG, it keeps balance between Image Quality and Image file size.

Week 7 – Semiotics

November 19, 2009 Leave a comment

SORRY GUYS I DONT KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED BUT WORDPRESS WILL NOT POST THE PICTURES I AM PUTTING IN , I WILL TRY HAVE IT FIXED SOON, UNTIL THEN JUST GO WILD WITH IMAGINATION.

This week was an extremely enjoyable lecture.

We focused on Semiotics, I could explain what semiotics is but i would prefer to use an example …… 🙂

For Example:

This is NOT a Cow

This is only an Image of a cow.

We also learned about Signs & Signifiers.

A signifier is whatever puts the image in your head, wehther it be words, facial expression, picture etc.

The signified is the image or picture or the thought that the signifier puts into your head.

For example the word “ROSE” makes you automatically think of the image of a rose in your head.

Example for Signifier and signified

We also took a look at how this can be used in advertisements

And i was suprised by how much i could be influenced into buying items without even noticing it.

Next time you look at any kind of advertisement, i invite you to stop take a deep breath and let it soak in and think to yourself, How does this make me feel and does it make me want to buy this product?

Thank you all for reading this and i look forward to writing up next weeks session,

IMMA Field Trip

November 14, 2009 Leave a comment

We went on a trip to IMMA last week.

It was an exhibition of modern art. Im did’nt really like anything there except for the part of taking photo’s outside in the surrounding area.

We werent supposed to take pictures inside but i only want the best for my readers so i snook 2 or 3 just to give you a taste of what was there.

ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh don’t tell anyone…….

I really enjoyed the trip though becaus i got to go around the nice area at the side of the building.

I also learned a bit more about using a camera, Mainly on Shutter speed and ISO for 2 reasons.

Reason 1 is because we were asked to show a shot without motion blur which was done by choosing a really fast shutter speed , say around 1/20 of a second.

This is motion picture:

The other reason is because i found a hole in the wall that had a type of tunnel with a gate at the end, but it was almost pitch black so i had to put the shutter speed up to about 10 seconds and the ISO to around 400.It was really hard to get the shot because the whole in the wall was so small that i had to hold the camera extremely steady with only one hand.

This is the shot:

And i am sorry for posting this a little late, it completely skipped my mind.

Visual Language-Week 5

This week in Visual Language we learned about Bitmap images and the Different Formats that are out there.

The Formats were:

JPEG – (Joint Photograhic Experts Group) This format is best used for Photographs

GIF –  (Graphics Interchange Format) This format is best used for pictures for the internet.

PNG – (Portable Networks Graphics) This format is very similar to GIF.

Then we looked at vectors. Which are real handy for logos as they can change size without loosing any quality.
